Find answers to common questions about our application process, tuition fees, auditions and more.
When do auditions take place? Auditions are usually held in Spring for the September intake. This may depend on when your application is submitted. After we receive your application, we will contact you to arrange a visit to SMA and a subsequent audition.
Do I need formal qualifications? No. We welcome applications from young musicians at all stages of learning. Passion, enthusiasm and dedication are what we look for.
What does the audition involve? You will be asked to perform pieces and scales on your instrument(s) and you will also have a short discussion about your musical interests and goals.
How much does it cost? Timetables are curated for each student, therefore fees for each place can vary. Check our fees & bursaries page for more info on Core Fees.
Are bursaries available? Yes. The Music & Dance Scheme offers means-tested bursaries that can cover part or all of a student's study, depending on eligibility. We are also supported by trusts and donors who generously sponsor additional bursary places. We strongly encourage all eligible families to apply for a bursary.
When do classes run? SMA runs each Saturday during term time (30 weeks annually). Concerts are usually held on teaching days but are often outside usual teaching hours.
What age range do you accept? SMA works with young people aged 8-19. Our Infant Academy provides tuition for children aged 4-8.
