Sheffield Brass Triumphs Again!

It's already been a week since we invited the fantastic internationally-renowned trombonist Kris Garfitt back to Sheffield for a special up-close-and-personal concert. He brought with him his equally as fantastic accompanist Seri Dan with him for the concert on Friday 22nd November at St Andrew's Church, Psalter Lane.

With a programme packed full of twists and turns, Kris performed pieces by the likes of Guy Ropartz, Carl Maria von Weber and Enrique Crespo. At the end of the programme the dynamic duo were joined by Sheffield Music Academy's very own Ian Sankey to play a wonderful trombone duet by Johannes Brahms.

We extended our invitation to Kris and Seri for them to join us on Saturday to run workshops with our brass and piano students. Kris, alongside SMA teachers Simon Twigge and Ian Sankey, were also joined by ex-SMA students and now-conservatoire attendees Will Illingworth and Chris Barron. They worked on technique, breathing and sounds with our brass students, which culminated in a brass celebration concert at lunchtime.

It was great to see some of our young bras students play solos and duets (accompanied by Seri) in the concert, as well as the two big brass pieces at the end of the concert. The audience were also treated to a performance by Kris and Ian.

SMA would like to send our thanks to Kris and Seri for their fantastic concert and also for coming to listen and play with our students the next day! We're looking forward to welcoming you both back to Sheffield soon!

A massive well done to all of our students who took part in the November 2019 Brass Day! We can't wait for the next!
