Simon Twigge

French Horn/Cornet Tutor

Simon Twigge was born in Southport, but educated in Liverpool where he won a scholarship from Liverpool Education Authority to study with Alfred (Jim) Dowling (RLPO Principal Horn) aged 14 after a year of learning the horn. He then went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music with Derek Taylor (BBCSO), Richard Watkins (Philharmonia) and the late Nick Bush (LPO). Whilst there he took part in master classes with Michael Thomson (Horn Soloist), Tony Halstead (Hand Horn Soloist), Fergus McWilliam (Berlin PO), Sigi Nissel (Amadeus Quartet) and Karl Leister (Berlin PO). He won various  Prizes and Awards at the RAM for solo playing and chamber music.

Simon's playing career has been varied from working with major orchestras in the UK such as BBCSO, BBCPO, Philharmonia, RLPO, Manchester Camerata to Opera Companies such as CBTO and YOP to the ROH. Chamber music groups such as Camerata Wind Soloist and SMA's own Clarinet, Horn and Piano Trio with Roberto Meoni and John Grundy. Musical Theatre for Cameron Macintosh Productions including Les Mis and Phantom of the Opera and for Kilworth House's recent 5-star productions of West Side Story. He currently plays as first horn for the Amici Orchestra and many other orchestras around the region and has taken part in several recording projects for Victorian Opera in Manchester under Richard Bonynge.

 

Simon has been fortunate to have been invited to give recitals for the BBC Radio 3 premiering the Second Unaccompanied Suite by Robin Holloway, Carlisle International Festive, Carlisle Cathedral's Live at Lunchtime, Sheffield Cathedral and various music clubs. He has performed all the Mozart Concerti, the Britten Serenade and led a section of Horns in the Schumann Konzertstuck. 

 

Simon has enjoyed a varied teaching career starting at the Royal Academy of Music's Intermediate Course, The Purcell school, Watford School of Music, the Kind David High and Primary Schools (Liverpool) and the John Lyon School (Harrow). Former students are now enjoying highly successful careers including the current First Horns of the RLPO and BBCNOW, and members of the ROH & Philharmonia Orchestra.
